This icon is based on a non-traditional icon of Mary, Joy of All Joys, also known as the “Seraphimo-Diveyevskaya” icon.

The image shows Mary at the moment of the Annunciation. Her arms are folded in prayerful submission, and her eyes are lowered in humility as she prepares to give her response to the Archangel Gabriel: “Let it be to me according to thy word.”

The inscription around her halo is written by hand in Cyrillic and reads: “Rejoice, O Virgin Bride” (Радуйся Невесто Неневестная), the refrain of the Akathist Hymn to the Holy Virgin, one of the best-known Orthodox services of devotion.

The icon is associated with St. Seraphim of Sarov (1754–1833), who is traditionally said to have had a particular devotion to this image.

I painted this icon in egg tempera on wood, following the layered approach of Byzantine icon painting. The hand-painted Cyrillic inscription is part of the original artwork.
