This hand-painted Eastern Orthodox icon depicts the Fiery Ascension of the Prophet Elijah, bringing together two episodes from the biblical account of his life.

In the upper scene, Elijah stands in a fiery chariot surrounded by a red cloud as he ascends to heaven. Below, his disciple Elisha holds the mantle that Elijah leaves behind. The central scene depicts Elijah resting as an angel approaches him with the message that a long journey lies ahead.

The icon is distinguished by its detailed ornamentation and traditional decorative techniques. Gold leaf is applied to the surface, while assist, also known as mordant gilding, adds fine gold lines and highlights to the angels wings. This technique creates luminous accents against the rich colours of the egg tempera painting. A delicate floral ornament frames the icon, complementing the gilded details.
