Hamsa is a palm-shaped amulet popular throughout the Middle East and North Africa. It is a sign of protection that also represents blessings, power, and strength. This image was recognized in many societies throughout history; it predates Judaism, Christianity and Islam. In Islam, it is known as the hand of Fatima. Levantine Christians call it the hand of Mary. Jews refer to it as the hand of Miriam (the biblical Miriam, sister of Moses and Aaron).

Early use of the hamsa has been traced to ancient Mesopotamia. Other symbols of divine protection based around the hand include the Hand-of-Venus, the Hand-of-Mary and in the Buddha’s gesture of teaching and protection.

The frame is an integral part of the painting and created in the sgraffito technique, inspired by oriental ornaments.
